***: Native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) stands as a monumental figure in both the physical and cultural landscapes of the region. It can grow to be over 40 feet tall and live upwards of 150 years. Saguaros grow their first "arms" or lateral branches around 75 years of age, but some never grow any arms. These cacti are not just vital to the desert ecosystem, providing habitat and food for numerous wildlife species, but they also hold significant cultural value, featuring prominently in the mythology and symbolism of the indigenous Tohono O’odham Nation and other native peoples.
